Hello dear friends,
You might be thinking that we’re going to open a Newfie farm here or perhaps go to a big Newfie pow wow. But it’s nothing quite that exciting. I was looking at mom’s calendar the other day, and I realized that Christmas is only about 9 weeks away. Now I don’t know about you, but that makes me pretty darn giddy. I love Christmas because I always get some really yummy presents. And sometimes there is that white stuff they call snow which is SO delicious to eat!
This year, I get to spend the holiday with my second most favorite family on the planet because my family has decided to abandon me over one of the greatest days of the years. *sniffle* But at least our neighbors still love me. I just hope that mom and dad don’t forget to leave my presents behind!
Speaking of presents, I know that humans do this really silly thing where they like to run around at the very last moment buying gifts for everyone on their list. It’s not as if you don’t know that Christmas is coming all year long. The day of the year doesn’t even change. So what gives people?
I thought I would try to give you a little bit of help for the dog lover in your life, or anyone you know who is thinking about getting an awesome Newfie of their own. Ninety-Nine Newfies is an awesome book which is actually a collection of short stories written by people with Newfoundland dogs. The stories range from funny to heart-warming to amazing, and if you don’t have your own Newfie, the book will make you want to go find one just so you can give it a hug.
My humans bought this book before they got me, because they heard it was the ideal book for people who really want to get a better understanding of a Newfoundland’s behavior and goofiness. And it’s truly a great introduction to the breed. Short 2-4 page tales are shared about 99 Newfies in over 90 stories, by the humans who love them. All of them are short enough to read here and there when you have a few minutes to spare. But trust me, you’re going to want to read this book straight through because it’s just so entertaining.
Although the book was written in 2001 and many of the dogs mentioned are no longer on this Earth, you will want to read the stories over and over again because they are really wonderful. Heroic puppies making rescues in the bath tub, Landseer’s that want you to know that they truly are smarter than you, and just plain crazy Newfies who make their owners wish they’d been paying a bit more attention.
There’s a lot of talk about a sequel to Ninety-Nine Newfies on the Newf-L list, which is where the idea for this book began. In fact, Pat Seawell (the editor of the book) has already collected stories and begun putting it all together — so hopefully the Newf lovers of the world won’t have to wait too much longer for it to be released.
Not only is the book itself great, but 90% of the profits made on this book go to the Newfoundland Health Challenge, which does scientific research to benefit my beautiful breed. So you’re getting an entertaining gift while also helping Newfies around the world. What could be better than that?
Now that I’ve just made your Christmas shopping a little bit easier, be sure to also remember to put the fabulous pooches that you know on your shopping list, too. We appreciate all sorts of edible gifts and things we can destroy! 😉
Bark at you later,
