The week that Mackenzie turned 4 months old, we decided to start giving her a few solid foods to see how she liked them. I intended to share some photos of the first eating sessions shortly there after, but here we are almost at the 5 month mark and I haven’t gotten to it. Oh well, life happens, right? Better late than never 🙂

We’ve been getting lots of baby food samples from companies like Nestle in the mail – it’s amazing how strongly they try to get you hooked on their products. We also took a trip to dm (a German drugstore) who is known to have some of the best baby products around. I have to admit, their selection in our small local store was pretty incredible. And it certainly seemed to be the most crowded aisle of the store!

Here’s a sampling of all the goodies we got. Everything from fennel tea to rice cereal and plenty of different fruits and veggies to try. It’s incredible how organic and “pure” baby food has become…the baby food we bought is actually bio-dynamic which is an organic avenue we’ll never be following. I was surprised to see that some of the jars recommended for 4 month olds also included beef and chicken. We picked up a couple of them but will be waiting until we try everything else before giving those a go.

The first meal was carrots. They were one of the sample jars we got in the mail. Strangely enough, they smelled like tomatoes. Don’t see us buying that brand – Alete it might have been? As you can see, Mackenzie wasn’t too convinced either.

We haven’t bought a high chair yet for Mack; somehow we didn’t imagine 4 months going by so fast. But we do have a fabulous contraption called a Sack n Seat. It’s fabric high chair that you can take everywhere with you – it even includes its own little pouch which is attached so you can’t lose it. They only seem to have them here in Europe but they are fantastic. It only costs about 20 euros and I was a bit skeptical when we bought it but it works really well. And it’s so incredibly practical. You can turn virtually any chair into a kid-friendly seat. Sure there’s no table in front of them but it frees up your hands at least and keeps baby where you need her.

We’ve tried lots of other foods now. The Alnatura jarred food that we bought is really good: apples & mangoes (this one tastes awesome), pears & apricots, carrots & potatoes, just carrots. She wasn’t so sure about the whole eating thing at first but now she’s opening her mouth when we bring the spoon closer and definitely seems to be grasping this new concept.

Here comes the food Mackenzie

Ayla is thoroughly enjoying it as well. She gets the left over part of the jar that isn’t finished in 2 days. I have also been freezing some of it and found that Mack really likes it as tiny popsicles – something she’s really going to enjoy as she starts teething. Unfortunately the consistency is a bit weird when you thaw it for eating, getting a bit chunky. Not likely to be a problem later on, but not so useful when you have no teeth.
