This summer hasn’t really been good to Ayla. She has had to go to the vet three times so far; once for her shots, another time for her sore shoulder and this time….suspected rat poison.
We live on an old farm and the previous owner was a nut about putting out rat poison. Since we have been cleaning and renovating we have pulled rat poison trays from pretty much every room and building around here. Needless to say, the first weekend was spent searching for these little treasures of death. We thought we had gotten them all and are still not sure where Ayla found the tray, but on Friday night she did.
We took her to the vet early Saturday morning, even though she wasn’t showing any symptoms (rat poison does not induce vomiting and doesn’t show symptoms for up to a view days). The vet checked her and ran some blood tests. No poison traces at all – thank God. We still have to watch for symptoms for a few days such blood in the stool and urine, and droplets of blood on the mucous membranes around the eyes and mouth. So far all is clear and we are hoping for the best.
Now if we can just teach this stubborn, food-searching, goofball that not everything that smells good should be eaten we will be in business.
I do wonder what people are thinking when they indiscriminately put out rat poison. Experiments have shown that it does little to reduce the overall rat population. ]
Thank heavens Ayla was all right. My dogs became much more discriminating in their foraging for food as they got older.
I sure hope everything turns out okay! This is sure scary!
Love ya lots,
Maggie
I am glad to hear that Ayla is OK.. very scarey!

SCARY! Keep an eye on that girl!
Oh no, I swear there is something in the air, it’s scary all the dangers out there.
Keep an eye out and here’s keeping our paws crossed that it’s nothing!

I hope everything turns out well. 🙂 I’m a dog lover too, and I found your blog through Johann.
