We really wanted to work on the greenhouse some more today but it’s Sunday and we’re supposed to be fairly quiet. So we decided to work on finally filling up the trash container sitting in the courtyard so it can be hauled off (it’s been here close to a month now I guess). We have been talking about expanding the workshop table in the barn but needed to take out a bunch of shelving and move a bunch of garden stuff left behind by the PO.
So our first operation was to build up one of our IKEA Gorm storage shelves to hold the various gardening junk we now have – hand tools, fertilizers, pots, etc. We only had enough shelving left to do one full shelf so I guess we’ll have to add to it eventually. But the new shelf is already an improvement over the old ones and we cleaned out a lot of really rough chemicals that we won’t want to be using in our garden…or have the dog get a hold of.
One all of that was cleaned out, there was only the matter of removing the old shelves that were holding the gardening stuff and a few on the workshop side that look like they were once used as mailboxes in an office.
Removing these few shelves totally opened up the space in the workshop and it was already a major improvement. But while I was busy moving the gardening stuff and cleaning up a few other things around the workshop, S (hubby) was starting the process of sorting through the massive amount of wood stacked above the workbench. It was unfortunately just a few pieces of this and that, a lot of the wood very weathered and we just couldn’t imagine actually having a real use for it. but we did find quite a few pieces that will be useful when we construct the tomato & cucumber stands later on.
Once we got through that stack of wood, we moved on to the stuff piled beside the workbench. There was so much stuff it was actually blocking the doors of one of the storage shelves…which also happens to be full of wood. Did we mention the PO was a carpenter and had a serious problem with just discarding things? I mean there is certainly plenty of space here to just start collecting things and stashing stuff here and there to use at some point later on. But unfortunately since we haven’t placed most of these things here in the first place, we may never even know they existed. It did hurt us a bit to throw some things away but we’re holding on to the really special stuff.
It would seem the house also encourages carpentry because S is really gung ho about building out the workshop with all the right tools so we can start building a lot of the furniture around here. We really do need quite a few custom things and it’s quite a feeling of accomplishment when you know that you build something yourself and can really see the results. I definitely don’t see any reason to complain here. 🙂
Anyway, we’ve managed to fill up the container fairly well and will be calling to have it hauled off this week. It will be really nice to not have it sitting there in the courtyard. It feels like it’s been here forever. Not that there aren’t a lot of advantages to having one around. You never really have to worry about how to dispose of things…but they just aren’t very pretty.
