If this is the year that you choose to upgrade your career and change your job, you’ll need to make sure that you are able to find the right employer that fits your needs. Believe it or not, you might not consider the fact that a new employer needs to be appraised before you go for it. There is a lot to think about before you move onto a new employer and understanding those key things will help you to understand whether a job is suitable and fits your needs.

Employers are there to help you to grow your career as much as you are there to help them to grow their business. You need to ensure that you are choosing an employer that works for your future. As much as you will be working for them every day, you need to know you’re working for a business that looks at enhancing employee mental health and has good, strong values that align with yours. It might even be more important for you to choose an employer based on the company culture, too. So, let’s take a look at what you should be looking for in your next employer:

  • What are their values? This is so important to consider before you choose a new job to apply for. You need to know that the company has the right social and environmental values that align with your own. Is there a diversity and inclusion policy? Is there a sustainability consideration? You want to work for a business that has the right ethos as you do without that, you’re going to struggle to feel like you are in a place of growth.
  • Do they offer flexible work? It’s an important thing to think about in this day and age. Since the pandemic, so many employers have adopted flexible working policies and while there are still some out there who don’t, you need to check whether the policies are remote or hybrid. You should think about whether the job location is correct for you and whether the working hours meet what you need, too.
  • Do they care about your wellbeing? What is their holiday and sickness policy like? What do they offer new parents? You have to think about this so that you can ensure that you are going in with a company that actually cares about your personal time. You need to know that if you get sick, they will be supportive and not penalize you by making you make up the time.
  • Are they paying you enough? A good employer is one who sees your value and chooses to elevate your salary where they can. Poor employers pay below market rates and want an ‘above and beyond’ employee. Knowing which is which is how you know how to look for the right things in your next employer.

Your next job should be one that really stands out as a career gamechanger and you shouldn’t settle for anything less than that.
