While we were in Bavaria this weekend, we went to a nice little restaurant called Schlossgasthof zur Einkehr [(Haggn 26, 94362 Neukirchen, Tel: (09961) 701170)]. It’s a place the in-laws have been to several times and they always enjoyed it so we went to check it out. Definitely worth a visit if you are looking to have good food and fairly reasonable prices. The house chardonnay is quite good too.

I had a wild hare filet with red cabbag, spaetzle and a port wine sauce. The rabbit was perfectly cooked and surprisingly tender. An excellent combination with the red cabbage which I’ve been craving for a little while now. Spaetzle is made sort of like pasta but has a consistency more like scrambled eggs. But it’s really tasty and these were particularly good.

Stefan and his mom had the stuffed filet which was cut and filled with mustard and onions, and served with potatoes au gratin. He says it was the best steak he’s ever eaten and he’s trying to figure out how to recreate it already.

My mom and Stefan’s dad had a filet served on a bed of steamed vegetables with potatoes au gratin and a cognac sauce. Don’t you just love these plates? Villeroy & Boch…very nice. But a bit hard to rest your knife and fork on the edges without them sliding down.

We took Ayla with us to the restaurant and didn’t realize that out table was right next to the heater where the resident cat lays. He came sauntering in and completely tried to taunt Ayla. Thankfully Stefan had a good grip on her so she didn’t take off with him or the table. The cat finally found a way to get around Ayla and then proceeded to snooze as close to the heater as possible. He was not interested in being touched in any way though. I touched a paw which caused him to get up, turn his back to me and lay down again. He then licked the paw clean and went back to sleep.

This is the chef. I think he looks like a blond Gaston from Beauty and the Beast: strong jaw, broad shoulders…and a huge ego too. Quite the ladies man and he’s really a bit prettier than the photo lets on.

If you happen to be near here, go for it. And they apparently have a really nice beer garden too. A reaon to go visit again in the summer I guess. Terrible news 😉
