Has your lawn been looking a bit off lately? Is your neighbor’s lawn lush, green and inviting to walk through while yours is pale or even brown? Just because the winter is approaching doesn’t mean you need to ignore your lawn. In fact, this is a great time to plan for spring and do preventative maintenance for the summer.

Inspiration can come from the more natural, relaxing places. With proper attention to decor and landscaping, outdoor living spaces can be transformed into relaxation utopias. It is an investment that pays for itself not only for resale purposes, but for the release that a newly created living space can give you.

After spending time and money on a beautiful outdoor living space, maintenance becomes incredibly important. In fact, proper maintenance of your new space increases both satisfaction and longevity. Protect your outdoor setting from disease and decay.

Control Weeds and Pests

Weeds can grow and destroy even the most well cared-for lawns. Crabgrass, clovers, and dandelions are the three most prevalent weeds that come up early in the spring. Once these weeds begin to sprout it becomes more difficult to eradicate them.

To prevent them before they sprout, fertilize early in the spring, as soon as the ground thaws. Doing so will help prevent the weeds from getting a chance to start. If the sprouts have already come up, simple fertilizer will no longer do the trick. The weeds either need to be dug out from the roots using special tools (such as a dandelion fork or Japanese farmer tool), or a strong weed killer designed for grass will have to be applied. According to the Fit Turf reviews, many people have trouble eradicating these weeds on their own, so it really does help to hire a professional.

Every lawn and garden area suffers from its share of pests. The key to controlling pests is dependent on first understanding what pests are in the yard. While it is possible to eradicate pests on your own, the task can quickly become a large, time-consuming project. If pests are a problem, you will want to consider hiring a professional lawn care service to deal with the task for you. Pests may not seem like a big deal on the surface, but what they do under your grass can ruin even the best-kept lawns and gardens. Pests can also destroy outdoor furniture and decks.

Grow Deeper, Lusher Grass

Once weeds and pests are taken care of, growing and maintaining lush grass with deep roots is a much easier task. Lush grass only can happen when the roots of the grass grow deep. To get deeper roots, never mow more than 1/3 of the grass blade off at a time. Cutting too much, or cutting too short, will stress the grass and cause it to die. This is why the houses with the more lush grass mow once a week during the summer months. If the grass gets too long, a short mow can stress it. If the grass is cut too short, the roots cannot grow deep enough to survive and they die. Between 1 to 2 inches in length is generally ideal.

How much the lawn is watered makes a difference as well. Have you ever wondered why your neighbor, who only waters his lawn twice a week, has greener and more lush grass than you when you water every day? The reason is the depth the water can penetrate the soil. A deep watering allows the roots to grow deeper as well, giving the lawn a more lush growth. Experts recommend watering the grass with one inch of water every three days, instead of a half an inch of water every day. The water has more time to penetrate and help the roots of the grass grow, and the grass doesn’t drown in water every day.

If you don’t have time to maintain your yard on your own, there are professional services that can help. After investing in creating the perfect living space, isn’t it worth spending the money regularly to maintain it?
