I’m feeling a bit under the weather today. It appears I’ve gotten a bit of Mack’s wonderful cold…and although I’m not nearly as bad off as she was (or even as Stefan is) it’s just a house full of sniffles, sneezes, coughs and mucus. Anyone wanna come by for dinner? 😉
One of the bright points in my days right now, since the weather has gotten chilly and grey for a few days, is walking through the kitchen and glancing at what has popped up in the sprouting trays. There are definitely already some signs of life…although I’m sure they would appreciate just a bit more sun right now (and so would I). 😉
The tomato seeds are already showing signs of life and quite a few different types have opened up in the last day or so. Grape tomatoes from a friend of ours, Black Krim, Big Rainbow, Oxheart and Sacher chocolate tomatoes have all at least begun to show themselves through the dirt. I’ve even had to cull a few of the grape tomato plants already because they were so tiny that I ended up with quite a few of them in each hole.
In the bean department, the Clemson string less green beans are sprouting but nothing yet from the sugar beans. This is the first time in a couple of years that we’ve grown beans, so we’ll see how they do.
There are also spaghetti squash and okra seeds peaking out. I actually grabbed the spaghetti seeds out of a squash I bought at REWE, so I’m hoping that nothing goes haywire with them.
And the last thing showing life are the red cabbage seedlings, and they’re actually doing nearly as well as the tomatoes.

I love how the little red cabbage seedlings look like tiny butterflies right now.
Nothing yet from any of the peppers, but they might be waiting for warmer, sunnier days again.

So sorry to hear that you are ill (I totally understand as I’ve been battling my own snotty nose and hacky cough this week). I hope that ALL OF YOU are well soon!! In the mean time, loving the little seedlings that are popping up. I’ve been considering adding beans to our little plot, but I think I’d rather try eggplant this summer. We shall see. 🙂
Thanks, Carrie. Glad that you all are feeling better too — and hopefully will remain that way!
Eggplant likes it warm, so choose a sunny spot for it. Also, you may need to help pollinate the female flowers to get fruit. We’ve had to do that the last couple years. It’s pretty simple — just look for a male flower (they have less of a bulb at the base, I think I even photographed that once in the blog), pull it off, and rub it on the female flowers.
