Around a month ago, I put out a “searching for” request on Freecycle for canning jars. I’m part of about 5 local groups here within a 45 minute driving range but there has rarely been anything I’ve wanted from these lists. There was a sequoia tree once which I thought would have been really cool, especially with the arrival of Mackenzie, but that went before I could get it apparently. And we have listed a couple things on Freecycle with a lot of success, although one does want to reach through the computer to smack people in the head sometimes.
We put out an offer for a large buffet from the 70’s which we just didn’t have the time to restore. Plus I have about 4 other beautiful pieces of furniture in our barn that I need to do something with and then find a home for in the house. So the ad runs and we specifically listed EXACTLY how big the thing is (over 6 feet wide & high) and someone writes to ask if they can fit it in their compact hatchback. Um NO! Although I would have loved to see them try it.
But I digress. So I have seen a lot of people posting “searching for” ads lately and thought, why not give it a try. I got no responses at all and figured that was the end of it…until Wednesday. I got an email from a woman who asked me to give her a call. She said she was going to visit her father and he had a “bunch” of jars that she could bring home.
So we gave her a call and she asked just how many jars we needed. We asked how many she had to give. She replied that her father’s basement is full of them and she’d be happy to bring us as many as we could handle. Naturally we told her to bring it on! She’s supposed to come back from his place in a couple weeks and will bring as many jars as she can handle with her. I’m still wondering if she will really let us have them for free…but that is what the site is all about and she hasn’t mentioned money thus far. Heck, I’ll pay for her gas to bring the things back if she wants; we all know how expensive that is! Should be interesting to see just how many jars she bestows on us…but we’re hoping we’ve hit the motherload and can ask her for more jars in the future as we start filling up the 100 or so we have here already. Good thing we have a big farm… 🙂
