woof wednesday

Hello everyone!

Did you know that animals around the world actually have a day reserved for them? It’s true. Every October 4th since 1931, World Animal Day has been celebrated. It was first started by a group of ecologists in Florence, Italy, who wanted to raise awareness about endangered species and animals in general. This particular day was chosen because it is the feast day of the patron saint of animals and the environment, St Francis of Assisi.

Although many churches hold a Blessing for Animals on the Sunday closest to October 4th, it’s far more than just a religious event. Schools, youth groups, animal shelters and rescues, clubs, groups and animal lovers may honor this day of animals in a variety of ways, from information sessions, open houses, creating and displaying artwork and sometimes even some protests to increase animal rights or stop animal cruelty.

The first official World Animal day was held in the UK in 2003…and since then, the number of participants around the world has grown dramatically. It’s a great opportunity to start volunteering at your local animal shelter or drop off donations. Or maybe you just decide to do something extra special for the animals in your life. Say, for example, my humans wanted to take me swimming somewhere and provide an extra special meal for me…I would certainly not object!  Or perhaps mom can convince Mackenzie to draw an extra special picture of me (although it won’t really be recognizable) and let her feed me some special treats. Maybe we’ll even sit around and talk about all kinds of animals in the world, look at pictures of them, talk about where they live and enjoy some animal movies! I do love me a good dog movie — but nothing too sad, please. I’m very sensitive.

Find out if there are any events organized in your area or just learn more about the World Animal Day on the official website.  You can also make a pledge on the website to express your support for the cause.

What would you like to do this year for World Animal Day?

Kisses,
